Tips for Surviving Medical School

Remember when you were a premedical student in college? It seems like a century ago for many of us who have just completed the first year of medical school. It feels that way because our lives have changed dramatically. Normal life seems to have vanished, and suddenly, 24 hours in a day are not enough to get through the enormous volumes of information that we are expected to learn for every exam. It seems virtually impossible. We barely have time to eat or sleep.

Medical school is not the end of the world. Take it from us, 2 students who have been there, when we say that medical school is what you make of it. Do not let medicine define you; instead, you should tailor medicine to your lifestyle. Otherwise, you might become overwhelmed by the demands of your new life and lose the sense of why you chose medicine in the first place.

How do you survive medical school? From the beginning, time management must be a major priority. If you can manage your time successfully, you can still enjoy your life to a certain extent. Studying in med school is not the same as it was in college; this is a new world where you have to explore different techniques and find what works best for you. In medical school, it is all about studying smart, not studying hard. If you don't know this at the beginning, you will learn it the hard way.

Studying medicine is a long process and demands a great amount of discipline and sacrifice. But the reward is priceless. We hope that you chose medicine for the amazing field it is: the rich opportunities it provides for helping humans and the avenues it opens for making a difference in the world. The following are some of the most common pieces of advice we have collected:
  1. Take care of yourself. You may face long-term negative consequences to your health if you adopt negative behaviors. Do not deprive yourself of healthy, fresh food. Do not ruin your health by eating fast food and avoiding exercise. Do not pull all-nighters and deprive your body and brain of sleep; the consequences are too severe for what may be only 15 minutes of productive studying. Your brain needs fresh food, water, fruits, and vegetables. Your body needs exercise and sleep.
  2. Do not compete with your classmates or compare your grades with others. We all had to be competitive to get into medical school. But once you are accepted, it becomes a level playing field. Although many students still compete with their classmates, it will not make them better physicians. Getting a 95% on your pathology exam does not mean you will be a great pathologist or clinician. As soon as you walk out of your first exam, look around, and you will see people obsessing about what the right answer was for Question 13. It is easy to spot them. They will come to you and ask you if you put "C" for Question 84. Seriously! Avoid everyone after the exam, and make friends with those who share your philosophy.
  3. Answer practice questions while you study. "Studying my notes 10 times is probably the best way to prepare for exams." Wrong! The only way to test your learning is to do practice questions. For example, after studying your Board Review Series physiology textbook, make sure you complete the questions at the end of each chapter. This will help solidify the concepts you just read. Studying the same thing repeatedly does not make you smarter, but getting a question wrong will teach you quite a bit. Professional educators will tell you that it is statistically proven that students who do more questions perform better on boards, and that the only time you should go back to the big books is when you consistently miss questions on a certain topic and the answer explanations are insufficient.
  4. Learn the big picture. You will likely start your first day in school delving into biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, or histology. From the start, instructors talk about columnar cells, impulse transmission, and glycolysis in fine detail. The next day, you are learning about brachial plexus and cardiac output. This is an enormous amount of information overload and students are often not prepared. As you memorize, learn the big picture
  5. Study with groups. "I am going to study on my own because I don't need anyone's help." Wrong! Medicine is all about teamwork and sharing information. You have to be able to cooperate with others. Even when you apply for residency, it is important to keep this concept in mind. The moment the residency directors feel you will not be a good team player or that you might have "issues" with your colleagues, your application goes in the shredder. Find a small group of people who share the same healthy habits as you, meaning they like to exercise, they do not like to discuss grades, and they have a positive attitude. Once you find the right group, arrange to meet weekly for several hours to ask each other questions about concepts you do not understand. Even better, ask each other questions on little details you think your friends might have understood. Arrange for a review session the night before the exam for last-minute tweaking of your knowledge.
  6. Take time to engage in stress-relieving activities. Everyone in your class is facing the same amount of stress, some people more than others. You might notice some students walk around with a frown, whereas others wear huge smiles. How is that possible if they are all facing the same pressure? Again, it is time management. If you have extra time, you are able to reduce stress. Spend time with friends, or do something on your own that makes you feel better. Activities like exercise, yoga, listening to calm music, talking to your parents or praying -- there is something out there that makes you feel better. Find it and do it. Do not let the stress affect your studies, relationships and, most importantly, health.
Finally, and we cannot emphasize this enough, remember that we are joining a great profession. Be passionate about what you are learning! Medicine is a treasure and an art.

As Henri Amiel said, "To me, the ideal doctor would be a man endowed with profound knowledge of life and of the soul, intuitively divining any suffering or disorder of whatever kind, and restoring peace by his mere presence."

REALITY HURTS ^^

assalamualaikum..

....................................

being a medical student looks really cool from the outside..

yah..u got the GLORY..

senyum je la saya waktu..masa mula2 dulu rasa kembang semacam je dalam hati but now rasa cam nak lari je..
salah satu sebabnya---> mula la org kampung tanya berbagai soalan..

medic is not just 1+1=2..takda yang pasti dalam medic..
contohnya sakit perut+diarhea ---> mostly orang akan conclude food poisoning..
it can be food poisoning but also can be few more hundreds disease in the list
got it???
saya ulang sekali lagi ---> TIADA BENDA YANG PASTI DALAM PERUBATAN !!!

..................................................................

itu just masyarakat

yeah masyarakat kadang2 terlalu memandang tinggi pada profesion doktor..sampaikan semua masa zaman kecik cita-citanya nak jadi doktor..at least dalam satu kelas mesti ada paling kurang 5 orang nak jadi doktor..

tapi realiti sebenarnya hanya satu kelompok masyrakat that knows it better =)

tadi just sedikt daripada cabaran from masyrakat..

the next cabaran would be ----> STUDY STUDY STUDY

be a medical student and becoming a doctor is a lifetime study..

masa jadi student, belajar untuk menjadi doktor..dan bila anda dah jadi doktor pun anda masih perlu belajar..belajar tanpa henti..got it??

dan belajar bukan macam zaman kita sekolah2 dulu..just know few things--> u can still get A or at least C..
but for medic u need to know as much as possible..
believe me..
tengoklah buku2 tebal bawah ni..

this is just the few ^^
gambar di atas di ambil masa 1st year.saat itu buku masih ckit..sekarang 4th year-->;4 rak yang diatas tu dipenuhi buku2 tebal.. =)

teringat ada kata2 seorang doktor pada sahabat saya

MEDICAL SCHOOL DOES NOT NEED GENIUS PEOPLE,IT NEEDS HARDWORKING PEOPLE

so tips terpenting yang untuk menjadi medical student --> u have to be really2 hardworking, not genius but hardworking..
sebabnya kalau anda rajin, u can do it but if you only rely on your genius properties u may not make it.

...............................................................................

cabaran ke 3 -----> FAIL/GAGAL

but still walaupun kita study hard --> lebih hardworking dari zaman sekolah ---> there is possibility to
FAIL..

but somehow dah berjaya sampai ke tahun 4..tapi feel menangis still ada lagi..bila stress tu la kejanya..hyperactivity of lacrimal gland(kelenjar air mata) due to stress =)

dan setiap tahun ada je few students have to repeat one year hanya kerana FAIL exam..ni just peraturan USM yang sangat kejam..kalau U lain just repeat paper..but for USM --> once fail final exam --> repeat year..kejam kan???
dan believe me -- orang2 yang ditakdirkan repeat year bukannya tak study..diorang study..saya saksi mereka..kami study bersama-sama..but somehow mungkin rezki tak berpihak pada mereka.. =(

...........................................................................
cabaran ke 4 ------> UNIVERSITY LIFE

selalu kan dengar budak2 universiti cuti semester 2-3 bulan?
selalu dengar budak2 universiti just ada kelas sikit2, petang selalunya free?
selalu dengar life universiti best--discipline tak berapa ketat?

masa saya zaman sekolah saya selalu dengar benda-benda macam ni..jadi saya sangat excited nak masuk university..
ternyata saya terpedaya =)

yes university life is cool ^^
yes it is more cool if u are not a medical student..

kenapa saya cakap camtu???
this is my point..

2) ur life 5 days a week are full booked !!!
most of it full with lecture, clinical slot , PBL and few more slots..yeah it is full...
memang hujung minggu is like heaven for u =)
yeah I LOVE WEEKEND !!

3) disiplin tak ketat? ini ikut universiti sebenarnya..but most medical school---> peraturannya ketat..dari segi etika bajunya, pasal kedatangan ke kelas..we are trained to be a discipline doctor, insyALLAH.

but still ur university life is still COOL..
make friends ---> being in a group of members that know us better as we are in the same boat =)
and bcoz of our holiday is limited,we really valued it so much..
macam saya, asal cuti je i will make use of it..plan it well..
-balik umah secepat yang boleh
-make a plan to meet kawan2 sekolah

.......................................................................

cabaran ke 5 ------> TANGGUNGJAWAB

doktor --> great responbility..
pegang nyawa orang --> ur action may cause the patientto died or live healthy

perasaan takut itu sentiasa ada..we have to endure it bcoz we have that title..the MD title at the back of our name..

tapi based on my experience going to the ward ---> it is SCARY to have that responsibility..

hanya kerana tersalah diagnose, we may cause the patient to died
hanya kerana tersalah dose drug, we may also cause the patient to died
then few others thing that we may do, may cause the patient to died..

yeah ---> great responbility..

WE WANT TO PRODUCE A SAFE DOCTOR, THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN PRODUCING A CLEVER DOCTOR.
.................................................

cabaran ke 6 ----> HOUSEMAN/DOKTOR PELATIH

inilah fasa selepas medical student and bfore becoming the real doctor..

houseman adalah fasa paling menakutkan..jika ditanya pada doktor2 senior most of them tak nak kembali ke zaman itu..
at that time most of ur time at hospital..oncall sentiasa..cuti sikit..selalu kena buli..macam2 lagi la..this is all based of what i heard from senior doctor..
u want to know better about houseman life..u may read this blog --->http://sayadoktor.blogspot.com/
seksa memang seksa but it is the time when u learn a lot..period of time where u are trained to be a safe doctor =)

.......................................................

pesanan buat adik-adikku..

kak takda niat nak jatuhkan semangat adik-adik..I just want to share with u the truth of medical life. sebabnya kak pernah tertanya dulu
"kenapa takda seorang pun cerita about the truth to me before i actually entered this medical life"

after reading all of this u still want to pursue your dream to be a doctor, go ahead..insyALLAH kak akan support adik2 bcoz if u really entered medical school u will be my junior and i will care u like my siblings bcoz we are on the same boat after all ^^

still want to be a doctor??? go ahead..kak akan support korang (^_^)

want to ask any question, u can ask here,or at my FB , or at my FORMSPRING..INSYALLAH saya akan jawab apa yang terdaya =)

that's all for today

p/s : saya ada clinical exam ahad ni..tlg doa2 kan ye =)

Criterias for becoming a Malaysian Govt Doctor

assalamualaikum..

buka FB terbaca artikel bertajuk -criterias for becoming a Malaysian Govt Doctor..
gila kejam statement2 tu..rasa cam nak kena cardiac arrest je gayanya (ok..statement over ckit hihi)

then somehow terkesan la kejap pada ainsabrina..rasa cam aik betul ke pilihan ain sabrina ni..(selalu sgt dah ada rasa ragu2 ni..lebih2 tggal berapa tahun je lagi akan jadi doktor sebenar *mengeluh* )

then malam ckit terbaca feedback kepada artikel tu..ni cam dapat defibrillator hikhik
--> so semangat ain sabrina dapat diselamatkan dengan defibrillator ni ^^

nak tau apa artikel & feedbacknya..
baca bawah ni..
ain sabrina dah combine kan..
yg tulisan biasa tu artikel sebenar then yg dihighlightkan tu adalah feedback kepada artikel sebenar =)

..............................

Criterias for becoming a Malaysian Govt Doctor.

1. No life outside medicine; this includes dating, sports, clubbing, chores for your parents and visiting the toilet

1. There is life outside medicine. Who said so you can't have life outside medicine. That's ridiculous. Think! There is doctor who is married with doctor in the same hospital. Also, there is doctor who is dating with staff in the hospital, including nurses! Well, that's what I call dating. Sport? Walking, running in the hospital isn't that call sport? Don't be "closed-minded" Think! There is doctor who joins the Fitness First. Clubbing? A muslim should avoid this. You know that. Think! Can't do chores for your parents? Of course you can’t if you are not living with them in the same house. But wait, praying Dua’ for your parents isn’t that one’s must do? That’s one simple chore you can do for your parents. Think! Even, there are doctors who become a member of NGO of Islamic Society eg. IKRAM, KARISMA, JIM, others as to dakwah. Think! The is life outside medicine. It’s just you who make your life in such a cocoon. Think!

2. Not to live with your parents. Move out ASAP as they will never understand the ludicrous working hours that u go through. Furthermore, chores are not suitable for u as to rule No. 1.

2. When you are in the working profession, you earn your own money. You have your own life. Still living with parents under one roof and being pampered by them? Of course not. And of course you can, if you want to. Well, not only doctors who are not living with their parents! Don't you think so? Think! Move out of the house ASAP because your parents wouldn’t understand your job? Please don’t follow this advice. Don’t run away from your parents. They wouldn’t understand your job? They’ve raised you up until you are able to stand on your own feet. They know you. They will know. They never come to hospital watching how a doctor working? I bet your mom had admitted to any Gynecology ward before this. Think!

3. Not to be married until completion of all 4 years of Govt Compulsory service as u will be transferred left and right to some of the most remote Govt clinics in Malaysia. Having wife and kids to follow you to your new working area may increase high level of stress on all parties. Furthermore, if your spouse is a Govt Doctor, he/she will also be transferred away from u and no matter what appeal is made, KKM will put up a deaf ear (unless u have big cables or of a certain skin color).

3. Bila jodoh dah sampai seru dan berkemampuan, berkahwinlah. Sememangnya fitrah manusia ingin saling mencintai dan dikasihi. No need to wait until you have complete for the Govt compulsory services. There is medical student who married during study. There is houseman who married her registra. Think! There is life outside medicine

4. If married, no to have children until u finish all 4 years of Govt Compulsory service, as to which u and your spouse will not have much time for your child/children or they end up not recognizing u and refer the Indonesian maid as their mother (change in language patterns commonly follow).

4. Get baby as soon as possible after getting married. Well, depend on your luck. Rezeki Allah bg lain-lain. Fikir balik. Apekah tujuan berkahwin? Think!

5. To obtain life insurance once your govt service begins as there is not many claims for accidents during work. Don't be fooled, Doctoring in Malaysia is hazardous.

5. Follow the work protocols in your hospital. That what keeps you safe. Think!

6. Able to withstand 36 hours of non stop work and stress without mistakenly labeling Left for Right or uvula for vulva (or Volvo S40)

6. 36 hours working non stop? Trust me, you can sleep in between. Yes, I’ve seen doctors doing it. Are you really sure non stop? Muslim has break for prayers. Isn’t that enough? How many doctors have died because of this? None. Think! Everybody can do it.

7. To buy a car with complete safety features (like I'm doing) which includes multiple airbags, ABS, EBD, side-front-rear-top-parallel and diagonal impact bars and seat belts to ensure survivability if u are involved in an accident because your driving resembled a drunkard maniac after working in the hospital for 40 hrs non stop.

7. Don’t drive if you know that you are drowsy or disoriented. Don’t be stupid. Get a taxi. Be smart, be safe. Think!

8. Constant supply of coffee

8. Coffee contain caffeine, and some how it can cause tolerance. If you are a coffee lover, of course you need constant supply of it. For coffee hater like me, better to avoid it. Find a better way to keep you fresh. Think!

9. Nicotine Patch as u will have the urge to start smoking due to overwhelming stress

9. Managing stress is very important. I’m sure you have had experienced any stressful event in your life. But yet, you managed to get over it. How? Nicotine patch? Definitely not. You are doctor. Don’t abuse drug. That’s why you learn psychiatry aren’t you? Think!

10. Interest in watching medical sitcoms such as House MD, Scrubs, ER, Grays Anatomy and Chicago Hope to inspire u to continue your life as a doctor as the exciting things u see on TV does not resemble the real life of a Malaysian govt doctor.

10. Don’t get over influenced by the media. That’s are all movies to be watched by the people all over the world. Of course the story line are all made up and making its much interesting. Don’t you think so? Do you think that the doctors’ life in the movies (House, Scrubs, Grey Anatomy) resembles its own doctors’ life in its country? Do you think so? Think! Do you think that you can get better life in other hospital than in Malaysia? How better is better? Think!

11. Not to have any pets or plants (not even cactuses) as u will have no time to feed or care for them and eventually all will end up in your mortuary.

11. There are doctors who have gardens at their houses. Yes, they have maid. So?

12. Able to endure the stench of your own sweat as to when 36 hours "on call" does not permit u time to bathe or freshen up.

12. Try to walk around with houseman in the hospital during your practical year. Don’t forget to smell them. Do they smelly? Never in my experience! They have time to take a break, and have bath. Think!

13. Able to carry on working without food or water over 15 hours. ( I was in OT for 16 hrs without food, water or bathroom breaks). If during fasting month, able to break your fast with ?water for injection? as u had no time to buy food.

13. Fasting. Islam has trained you to stay empty stomach, right? Sacrificing yourself to save someone’s life isn’t that beautiful? Think!

14. Able to come to work with fever/cough/illness or physical disability (sprained ankle etc) as to which doctors do not deserve MCs. (My MO was on crutches during rounds)

14. Doctors do deserve MCs. Who says so that they’re not deserve to get one?! Remember, we are all human being and human gets sick when they get sick. Don’t you think so? Nobody is perfect. My supervisor had MC because she had sore throat. What?! Sore throat? Think!

15. Able to stand scolding, destructive criticism, kiss ass behaviors, racial bias, finger pointing, scape goating, and in competency from your superiors.

15. Scolding, destructive criticism, racial bias, finger pointing from your supervisors are nothing. I am very sure you have trained to become resistant with all of these negative tortures during your practical years. Think! Why they do that? They love you. They want to make you a better doctor. They don’t want you to make mistakes. This profession involving lives. This is not a playground. Think! You want being pampered by them? Being nicely treated by them? This is not kindergarten anymore. Think! I love being scolded. That what keeps me moving on.

16. Able to withstand the jealousy when your friends call u up for some fun and ur stuck in the hospital during on call.

16. You think your life will be just confined to the hospital only? How many doctors having fun with families, travelling around the world, win noble prizes, etc, etc, etc………..? Think!

......................
then i like few advice the feedback writer give at the end of his article..

Never regret of what you are doing now, Medical Students…
Isn’t this your school-age AMBITION?

Yer cikgu, saye nak jadi dokter. Saye nak bantu orang sakit.

Wasn’t that your kiddy answer?
Yes, you wanted to be here. Yes you are.
Think! Think back.

Its not easy to get you here. Yes, here. How many years had you struggled to get you in this profession. You are now half-step distance to become a doctor. Never turn back.

I do believe that my life has been planned by Allah. Why am I here? Because Allah had planned for me to be here. Ouh, I need to find the hikmah behinds these. Allah knows what is the best for His servants.

Never let negative thought under estimate yourself, your capability. If other doctors who can do it, why not you? WHY NOT YOU? Of course there is NO SHORTCUT to be one. A consultant. You think it is easy to become one? They also had struggled through tough years to be one. Yes.

Every king was once a weak baby, and every awesome building was once just a drawing on a piece of paper. And you? THINK!

Jadi doktor, satu pekerjaan yang mulia. Yes, doctors playing God. But yet, everything happen dengan IzinNya. Saving lives, isn’t that mulia? Imagine you save someone’s life or making someone to have a better quality of life. And that person able to beribadat and do good things because you’ve helped that person. Don’t you think “saham pahala” gets to you? Allah knows.

What other profession yang the customer really trust the person? None can beat doctor profession. So, use this opportunity to dakwah as well. J

So GOOD LUCK my friends!
Happy study!~

habis meeting lak g menyibukkan diri..g perodua servis keta jap..
nak bawa balik keta ke png so kena servis la dulu..
then dari zuhur ke pukul 4 tu takda pa2 aktiviti so fikirn kembali menerwang memikirkan result...
then akhirnya pukul 4 tiba...
menapak la bermai-rmai ke dk 2..

masuk ja dk 2 tu tengok ramai je senior2 kat bahagian dapur...
ahhhhh cuak..
then naik atas ckit dah ramai dah sahabat2 yg dah sampai..
ahhhh cuak...
but doktor still tak sampai lagi..

so kami semua membuka telinga betul2 untuk mendengar nama kami..huhu gila cuak kot..
masa ni rasa bersyukur dilahirkan bernama mula dengan huruf a..cepat ckit dgr nama..
then lastly TDA menyebut nma "ain sabrina bt mohamed amiruddin"
ahhhhhhhhhhh lega tul waktu tu..
berkali2 kalimah alhamdulilah disebutkan..
betul2 rasa lega..betul2 rasa bersyukur...
then baru la dengar nama2 sahabat2 yg lain..
betul2 rasa bahagia..
alhamdulilah mostly sahabat2 yg rapat lulus..
bebudak study group semuanya alhamdulilah lulus..
study group 1 : aida,wan iliana,liana anuar,ain syaf,asma
study group 2 : madihah,izati,syuhaida,asiah,ain syaf,asma
thanks korang..alhamdulilah kita semua berjaya...

akan memasuki clinical year..full clinical..
bolehkah?? mampukah??? takut pun ada....
bercampur2 rasanya...cuak+takut+gembira+excited..
semuanya bercampur..

teruskan perjuangan............
teruskan usaha...........
teruskan berdoa........
insyALLAH berjaya.........
we can do it.......... (^_^)
